Buff Orpington

General Info

Buff Orpington hens are a dual-purpose breed that lay a respectable amount of bigger eggs.

Origin

Orpington Chickens first arrived on American soil in 1891 when William Cook (the original breeder ftom the UK) imported a large number to show to poultry farmers personally.

Appearance

Buff Orpington chickens are large, broad birds with golden buff feathers, white skin, and pinkish-white beaks and feet. They have a U-shaped silhouette and are known for their fluffy appearance.

Eggs

Buff Orpington hens lay light brown eggs that can range from pinkish to beigy-brown. They will lay between 200-280 large to extra large eggs.

Temperment

Orpingtons are gentle, docile birds that are easily tamed and make extraordinary pet chickens. With regular contact that builds trust and familiarity, they become affectionate and enjoy human contact. Our Buff Orpingtons display these traits wonderfully. Even the Roosters are very friendly birds.

Hardiness

Hot weather can be a problem for Orpingtons due to their dense feathers. They must have access to shade in the summer heat so they can stay cool. Cool weather is not a problem though cold weather will affect them just like all other Chickens. Their dense feathers can be a problem if they are exposed to wet weather.
