Roosters weigh about 8.5 lbs, while hens weigh about 6.5 lbs. Black Australorps typically live to be 6–10 years old. While they are sometimes also raised for meat, it is said that their black feathers make them difficult to pluck
Origin
The Black Australorp is an Australian breed that originated from the British Black Orpington.
Appearance
Black Australorps have glossy black feathers with a greenish-purple sheen. Baby chicks are black with white underparts and white patches around the head and wings.
Eggs
Black Australorp hens are prolific egg layers, producing 200–280 large, light brown eggs per year. Some hens have even laid over 300 eggs per year.
Temperment
Black Australorps are gentle, active, and friendly, making them a good choice for first-time chicken keepers.
Hardiness
Black Australorps do better in cold climates than warm climates.
