How much feed does an average Broiler consume?

Most Roasters (Cockerals) will consume approx the amount of food listed below

  • 3-4 lbs of starter (20% – week 1 & 2)
  • 7-8 lbs of grower (18% weeks 3 through 6)
  • 9-10 lbs of finisher (16% weeks 7 to 12)

These numbers will vary by breed and amount of time you leave the birds on each food.

Roosters (Cockerals) should hit 8-10 Lbs by Week 10-12.

The last 2 weeks of feed can be straight milled grains without supplements to help create the best tasting meat.

This whole thing is going to change based on individual yards and practices. Free Ranging will create healthier animals and much better meat.

The biggest thing we would like to stress is that Broilers need to get exercise to develop a bit of muscle to make the meat better. If you are using a Chicken Tractor you can do a couple things to ensure the birds get enough exercise.

Put the Waterer at one end of the tractor and food at the other end, this encourages the Chickens to walk back and forth instead of sitting in one spot and just gorging food and water. This type of life can lead to them becoming overweight and even breaking legs because of it.

Don’t treat your birds like they are in a factory, treat them good and make sure they get some exercise and fresh air.

This chart above equates to basically 22 Lbs of Feed for a 10 Lb Broiler in 10 weeks.
